Why Risk-Taking Is an Important Lesson for Children

It’s common and natural for parents to be protective of their children. There are many potential hazards in the outside world, and children generally aren’t aware of their own vulnerabilities. However, pre-k kids who learn about smart risk-taking may be better prepared to cope with life’s many challenges. When you’re choosing a child care center or pre-kindergarten for your little one, consider whether the curriculum allows for the development of smart risk-taking skills.

New Experiences
Smart risk-taking behavior isn’t about taking perilous, unnecessary risks that may be hazardous to a child’s health. Rather, it’s about encouraging children to enjoy new experiences and test the boundaries of their capabilities. When children learn to take smart risks, they learn how to go beyond their own comfort zones to experience new information and perspectives. These new experiences are an essential component of healthy development and growth.

Creative Expressions
Risk-taking lends itself indirectly to creative expression, another important component of healthy development. Children who are willing to experiment will find virtually limitless outlets for their creativity without fearing what others may think of their artwork or projects.

Coping Skills
Pre-k children who understand that risk taking is part of life develop stronger coping skills. They understand that not every risk will lead to success, but that they must try for a different solution. Children who can move past their temporary failures and try new approaches are better equipped to cope with the challenges they’ll face throughout their lives.

Healthy Self-Esteem
When pre-k kids take risks that lead to success, they develop a stronger sense of self-confidence and self-esteem. They begin to trust their own abilities, and to continually improve their skills.

Smart risk-taking is an essential component of the curriculum at A Child’s World.
